An Abanning in the Normannii Thiud Aet Reik

May-Day 2004

The folk below dance, around the May Day fire.

Seasons change and the tide-wheel keeps moving, May Day has come and gone again, the yearmal grow the brighter! This year the Normannii converged upon Roman Nose State park in Oklahoma to visit our shield companions in the Ealdriht. The weekend was an exciting one and a refreshing one, with friendships renewed and made.

A blot was held by Wulfgaest Thegn, before Swain Atheling and Eric Lord of the Ealdriht, in honor of Swain Atheling Nemian. Swain lord provided loaf and Husel for the folk, and High Sumble followed. In a true Theodish fashion, the sumble ran long, with a large number of people present from our combined tribes, and the Troth and Asatru communities as well. The women of the hall, once again, shined through in their grace, beauty, and skill. Lady Tee, Swain Atheling, his wif, and Micha Karlen served their folk as Ale Maidens, while each in turn laid their doom in the well. Beots to our Gods, ancestors and heroes alike where made, rich gifts were exchanged, bonds were forged and we are all the luckier for it. The peers, Swain Lord and Dan Lord made much gold-glad, and shown themselves ring-givers of renown. One such gift should be mentioned specifically, Lord Dan, First Atheling of the Normannii, presented Swain Atheling of the Ealdriht with a silver Circlet in the Sutton Hoo style, and a spear recovered from an anglo-saxon site in honor of the Vinfengi between our folk, and Swain Lord’s Athelingscip.

As a matter of record, let it also be known that Kevin Sergens did take the horn and make this boast, that come Yule 2004 he shall have forged a seax. To protect the luck of the hall, the Thule set forth this condition: should he fail to do so, that by Midsummer 2005 he shall provide that said seax with etchings on the blade. Should, for some reason, he fail there as well, then he shall be forced to purchase a seax of great worth from another smith. Rich Thain presented unto Normandy two new wehos of traditional style, to compliment the one he presented at Harrow Moot. Woden and Ing-Freyr now join Tiw in the Norman reliquary.

Before the Third and final round, the Normans took care of some business at hand. Jennifer Thainwif had earlier submitted to a Thinges Cunnian, and the Witan deemed her a free-woman, on her own Gefrain, and she must find a lord or lady to take hold to within a year and a day. Likewise, Rich Thain’s bells were lifted and he is now free to hear oaths and gain chattle. The Shild as between the Normans of Oetheland Scir, Culver rooftree, and the Ealdriht, House Wodening, was settled in full and deemed met by the mathel. Finally, two lordless wretches came forth and were sold into thrael in the usual fashion. The theodish thrall auction was held and lords were found to foster these two in their journey towards freedom. Jason Skalk was sold to Richard Thain for a thruppence as Debra Skalk was purchased by Micha Karlen for the same. Conn Gebur, Dan Lord’s Scop was gifted a White cape with tincturabulae by Micha Karlen, befitting his station.

Special thanks go to those who worked so hard, Lady “Tee” Wodening of the Ealdriht and her Shield Maidens and their kin, the folk of the Middle States, Oklahoma, and all who ventured from far and wide to attend- the hospitality was incredible and we felt like family as we were welcomed into your stead!
